Let’s take a look at some of the most commonly asked questions about cholesterol:

  • Is it dangerous for your good cholestoral to be to low?
  • What if my bad cholesterol is normal?
  • How can I increase my good cholesterol?

First of all you should know that cholesterol is produced by the liver in response to certain factors in your body. In my opinion, age and inflammation are factors that have the most influence on cholesterol.

Tried, tested and true ways to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL) are to focus on your diet and decrease inflammation. Most cholesterol produced by your body is in direct response to saturated fats in your diet. Saturated fats primarily come from animal products.

I believe that the liver produces cholesterol and injects it in to the blood stream in response to inflammation. Cholesterol in your blood acts as a binder to the acid. Get rid of the inflammation and your bad cholesterol will go down. Watching your diet is one of the easiest ways to reduce inflammation. I recommend having a green drink every day, such as Greens + – you may be interested in reading this Greens + review.

For optimal health, try to follow at least a few of these recommendations:

  • have a green drink in the morning, one at lunch and one with dinner
  • as I’ve said before, ensure that half of the food on your plate at each meal is vegetables
  • reduce your intake of refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta, pastries)
  • reduce your intake of the wrong types of fat – these include saturated fat (white stuff around your steak) and trans fat (fried foods such as french fries)
  • increase your intake of monounsaturated fat (avocados)
  • increase your intake of polyunsaturated fat (Omega-3 from fatty fish mostly)
  • increase HDL cholesterol with regular exercise: a 15 minutes warm up followed by 30 minutes of moderate exercise (you can still carry on a conversation) most days out of the week
  • Don’t smoke!
  • Limit alcohol consumption. Too much alcohol affects your liver, increasing bad cholesterol. The liver is capable of detoxifying about one drink a day. More than that can start to cause problems.
